Iceland's Centre for Arctic Issues

Akureyri’s role as a hub for Arctic research, collaboration and monitoring

The town of Akureyri hosts a range of institutions, initiatives, and working groups engaged in Arctic-related issues at both national and international levels. Their activities span research, education, monitoring, and observation, each guided by a distinct mandate. Some focus exclusively on Arctic matters, while others address the Arctic as part of a broader scope of work.

Akureyrarbær Municipality

The town of Akureyri has been an active participant in international and domestic cooperation since the 1990s, previously through the Northern Forum and Youth Eco Forum but today largely through participation in the Arctic Mayor´s Forum and various conferences.

The Directorate of Equality handles administration in the field of gender equality in Iceland. The Agency has been in involved in The Gender Equality in the Arctic (GEA) project with the Icelandic Arctic Cooperation Network.

The institute's main role is to conduct fundamental research on Icelandic nature, collect and process geospatial and geographical baseline data on the country, as well as operate a nature research station by Lake Mývatn.

The Icelandic Tourism Research Centre (ITRC) is a cooperative project between the University of Iceland, the University of Akureyri and Hólar University. The ITRC's aim is the improvement and promotion of tourism research in Iceland and strengthening the bonds of research and industry through domestic and international collaborative projects.
